Meet Burcu, our Senior Android Engineer
The Tech team builds and maintains the Tide app that our members use every day. We’d love for you to meet the people behind the software engineering team – here’s Burcu, our Senior Android Engineer.
👋 Hello! Introduce yourself in a sentence.
Hello! This is Burcu, formerly from Istanbul and now a new Londoner! I’m the biggest fan of Star Wars and don’t forget cats.
What’s your background?
I graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering from Anadolu University in Turkey. I have around 6 years of experience in app development and architecture at the biggest bank of Turkey.
I’m also one of the leads of Google Developer Groups and Women Techmakers Istanbul. As a WTM lead, I actively work to support women in tech.
And now, I’m planning to start writing technical posts for Medium. May the force be with me!
How did you cross paths with Tide?
When I moved to London from Istanbul, I was looking for a new fintech challenge. Tide has a lovely workplace and I was so impressed by the multicultural environment. Tide has been my first employer in London so it’s very special to me.
Typical working day:
The perfect day starts with coffee, of course. We’re an agile team, so let’s stand up! We’re now working on building new architecture for the lovely Tide application. Most of my day is spent researching and exploring It means that sometimes we can only research, explore and make PoC (proof of concept). All these things combined make up my typical working day.
What’s your favourite Tide feature?
Invoicing is my favourite! Even if I don’t own my own business, I think this feature makes life easier. But in general, Tide’s features are so simple to use. That’s the most important thing for mobile applications though, isn’t it?
What’s the most interesting challenge you’ve came across since you joined Tide?
Hmmm, let me think! As I said, I’m new in London. That meant a new home, new people and a new job. At first, I thought it was going to be hard for me to adapt, but it actually wasn’t. My colleagues helped me a lot to adapt, with both technical and non-technical things. So thanks to my colleagues for making everything easier for me!
What’s your hidden talent?
Force! I can talk with droids to help them understand people and also I have an acting talent for every live voice. Dzzt dzzt meow!
When you’re not at Tide, what’s your favourite thing to do?
Community community community! I believe that being a part of a community helps me always feel fresh and up to date. I love to meet new people, create something and share! In addition, I love to travel so much. There are tons of places that I’ve never seen, and I’m curious about them!
